The Brief

Our clients Matthew and Nancy gave us a brief to take their dated 70’s post-war home from drab and dreary to fab and airy and to find a solution to the main road noise problem that was hampering their lifestyle.

The Solutions

Henry’s the Handyman solution to the design brief was to remove the structural walls in the living/dining area and introducing a structural roof beam to open up the rooms into one large light-filled space. Replace chipboard flooring in the sunroom with hardwood flooring to match the existing redgum floorboards that were lying dormant under the dust-filled carpets, remodel bathroom and kitchen, all fittings and fixtures around the top level of the house, remove existing popcorn ceilings, dated wallpaper, paint with bright clean white colours to allow for maximum natural light to fill the rooms from the numerous windows within the house. All wallpapered walls were removed and refitted with Easycraft VJ panels which were finished in Dulux natural white paint. A dado rail featured half-wall was installed with soundproof batts installed to tie in the look throughout and remove the look of the old orange sunroom windows that were letting in both road noise and unwanted faded light without actually having to remove the windows and replace them with very expensive noise-proof glass panels.

The toilet and bathroom wall was opened up to add a doorway between the two rooms, with an open shelving solution added to the original space where the toilet door entry was located. The toilet walls were finished in Easycraft VJ to tie into other parts of the house, along with the master bedroom. The bath was removed and the old shower cubicle was replaced with an open flat floor shower with a new wall hung vanity (purchased from Facebook marketplace) with top-mounted basins and matte black tapware which we sourced for the clients from Bathroom Warehouse.

Carpets and vinyl were pulled up to reveal the beautiful old hardwood floors which were bought back to life and finished with a satin finish, new half splayed skirting boards installed to finish the look around the floors.

The kitchen was finished off with a breakfast nook in the corner which doubles as storage space under and adds a little wow factor in an otherwise dead space.

The wallpapered staircase walls were replaced with Easycraft VJ, the stairs and mid stair platform sanded back to timber and the old handrail system was overlapped with a new timber handrail, with the flooring area leveled and tiled to complete the look.
